Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has emphasized India’s rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and its growing leadership in global AI adoption.
India’s Growing AI Influence
At the IT Kottayam convocation ceremony, Sitharaman referenced Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s statement that India is the “use case capital of AI.” She highlighted that this recognition reflects India’s proactive approach—not just researching AI but implementing it on a large scale.
Underscoring AI awareness in the country, she noted that India recorded 3 billion AI-related app downloads in 2024, far exceeding 1.5 billion in the US and 1.3 billion in China.
AI Governance and Ethical Implementation
Sitharaman stressed that India’s leadership extends beyond AI adoption to shaping how AI is governed. Addressing the AI Action Summit in Paris, co-chaired by India and France, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted that AI is not just a national issue but a global responsibility. Sitharaman emphasized the importance of ethical, inclusive, and trustworthy AI development.
She also addressed concerns about AI misuse, stating that ethical challenges must be tackled from the outset to prevent unethical practices from going undetected.
India’s Policy-Driven AI Growth
The Finance Minister affirmed that India’s AI strategy is not merely experimental. The central government actively incorporates stakeholder inputs to craft policies that ensure AI receives due attention.
India’s innovation capabilities have been reflected in its Global Innovation Index ranking, which improved from 81st place in 2015 to 39th in 2024.
Intellectual Property & Economic Impact
India’s commitment to AI and innovation is also evident in its intellectual property growth:
- Patent-to-GDP ratio surged from 144 in 2013 to 381 in 2023, securing India’s position as the 7th highest in intangible asset intensity globally.
- India ranked 6th in global intellectual property filings (WIPO, 2023).
- Its Network Readiness Index improved from 79th in 2019 to 49th in 2024, showcasing increased innovation and self-reliance.
Conclusion
India’s AI-driven momentum is transforming it into a global leader in technological innovation. It surpasses major economies in AI adoption and intellectual property advancements. With a strategic focus on governance, ethics, and economic impact, India’s AI revolution is setting a precedent for the world.
