According to a recent study by cybersecurity solutions provider Check Point Software Technologies, the Indian healthcare industry has emerged as the most targeted sector for cyberattacks, experiencing an average of 8,614 assaults per organization per week.

Cyber Threats Across Industries:

The study also ranked education/research (7,983 attacks per week) and government/military (4,731 attacks per week) as the most affected sectors. Indian organizations faced 3,291 cyberattacks per week over the past six months, significantly exceeding the global average of 1,847.

Prevalent Cyber Threats in India:

The report identifies several dominant malware threats in India, including:

  • Remote Access Trojans (RATs)
  • Infostealer malware (Formbook)
  • Ransomware (Maze)
  • Botnets and downloaders (FakeUpdates)

In a significant data breach in May, cybercriminals exposed 500 GB of biometric data, including fingerprint and facial scan information, raising concerns about data security.

Growing Role of AI in Cyberattacks:

One of the most alarming findings is the increasing use of Generative AI (GenAI) in cyberattacks. According to the report, cybercriminals leveraged GenAI in 2024 to accelerate hacks, steal funds, and spread misinformation through deepfake videos and disinformation campaigns.

BYOD Environments & Rise in Infostealer Attacks:

The report also highlights a 58% increase in infostealer attacks, pointing to a growing cyber threat landscape. Additionally, cybercriminals exploited bring-your-own-device (BYOD) environments, with over 70% of compromised devices being personal, which put corporate data at risk.

Rising Global Cyber Threats:

The study underscores a 44% global cyberattack surge over the past year. It further warns that nation-state actors are shifting from short-term cyberattacks to long-term strategies to erode trust, destabilize institutions, and create systemic instability.

Call for Cyber Resilience:

Commenting on the findings, Maya Horowitz, VP of Research at Check Point Software, stated:

“Cybersecurity in 2025 is not just about protecting networks; it’s about safeguarding trust in our systems and institutions. The State of Global Cyber Security 2025 highlights the rapid evolution of threats and reinforces the need for resilience in the face of persistent and complex adversaries.”

With cyber threats evolving rapidly, the report emphasizes the need for robust security measures, proactive threat monitoring, and increased awareness to combat the rising tide of cyberattacks.
